Individual or family to commit at least one year of missionary service to investigate new work possibilities such as teaching English (starting a business) in order to build relationships so the seed of the Gospel can be sown and new outreach groups can grow into eventual churches. This person could also potentially work toward developing a multi-national church planting group of young Free Methodists from across Asia and help raise funds to support the group.
Any highly motivated individuals can be considered, but some practical experience in leading small group Bible studies and personal discipleship is preferred, and any experience in church planting would be significantly helpful. The candidate should have good interpersonal skills and be willing to develop cultural sensitivity. They must be able to take initiative, stay focused and look for strategic ways to engage with people. Interested individuals need to be flexible and resilient as they may be pioneering a new initiative. This 1 to 2-year assignment has potential for longer-term appointment.
Hong Kong (a city of more than 7 million) is a unique blend of Chinese heritage, British colonial influences and Cantonese culture in a high-tech modern setting. Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin) and English are the main spoken languages. Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. It has become a world-class financial, trading and business center with a landscape of skyscrapers, temples, shopping malls, traditional markets, green spaces for parks, beaches and mountain top views. Amid the beauty there is a spiritual darkness with 94% of the people living in Hong Kong not yet following Jesus. While there are 15 Free Methodist Churches in Hong Kong, the opportunity and need for starting new outreach groups and churches is wide open.
