PRESENT MINISTRIES

The Free Methodist Church in Nigeria has been preparing leaders through the Wesley Evangelical School of Theology (WEST). The pandemic affected the school’s operation, but WEST was scheduled to resume regular operation in April 2022. The Middle Belt Eastern Conference began a quarterly training program for ministers and lay leaders.

ORIGINS

Rev. Titus Akpan and other Nigerian Christians left their denomination in the early 1960s because animal sacrifices were included in worship services. They were determined to form a spiritual, New Testament church in southeast Nigeria. In 1962 some of the leaders ran across a tract bearing the name “Free Methodist Church.” They liked the name and decided to call the new group, “Christ Free Methodist Church of Nigeria.” For years efforts were made to affiliate with Free Methodists in North America but it was not until 1988 that official meetings took place. In October of that year this Nigerian group, some 1,800 people, were invited to become an official mission district of the Free Methodist Church USA.

Church Planting & Development

Funding Nigeria Church Planting and Development (CPD) will help resource the following people and strategic initiatives:

  • Transportation, food and lodging costs for pastors studying at Wesley Evangelical School of Theology
  • Travel costs for superintendents as they circulate to all their churches

Extra Mile Projects

Enugu & Eket Ministry Center Development

This fund supports the establishment of ministry centers in the key cities of Enugu and Eket. The fund also supports some costs of ministry in the meantime.

Nigeria Crisis and Compassion Fund

This fund enables us to respond quickly to specific human needs. Sometimes needs arise through conflict or attack. Other times an urgent need comes to our attention in connection with our ministry there. In many cases, people will be invited to give to a specific need, and donations to that need will be processed through this account.
