When the Church Prays

by Magaly Mora | Feb 1, 2025 | Heartbeat, HB Europe, HB Spain

Merly, an immigrant from Ecuador, began attending our Bible study in 2020. She had come to Spain many years ago to start a new life here. She joyfully received Jesus as her Savior, and a couple of months later, Merly was baptized. Since then, she has been caring for our church’s finances and preparing love baskets with nonperishable food and clothes for needy families. Merly’s husband, Juan, is a retired industrial mechanic; like Merly, he was born in Ecuador and has lived in Madrid, Spain, for 25 years.

Juan has never prohibited Merly from going and serving at church, but he did not believe in God and said he would never come with her to church. But the church was always praying for Juan, for his salvation. One morning, Juan fell at the entrance of a grocery store. He was on the floor and not able to move. The emergency services arrived and rushed him to a hospital. After all the tests, the diagnosis was not good: He will not be able to walk again; he will be tetraplegic. But the church was praying for Juan.

We visited Juan at the hospital. We shared the Word of God and sang about God, Who gives us peace amid life’s storms. We prayed with him, and he received Jesus as his personal Savior. Juan said that, at that moment, he felt a powerful presence in the room and in his body, making him move his shoulders and arms. We saw it and were amazed!

Juan had many surgeries and spent 18 months in a hospital specializing in his type of case. There, he received physical therapy and an electric wheelchair. He had to learn how to drive it with some fingers. It was also a hard time for Merly, working full time and visiting Juan at the hospital once or twice weekly. However, she never lost hope that God could heal.

The church continued praying for Juan. Suddenly, he began moving his hands and feet; he could stand. Later, Juan started to walk slowly but with some difficulty. God heard our prayers and answered them. Our God is awesome! Today, Juan is at home, adjusting to his new life. The women in the church share God’s love by preparing meals to accommodate Juan’s special diet.

Juan hasn’t come to church yet, but we are confident he will soon gather with those who have prayed for him. Great things happen when the church prays!
